Broken Ground Karen Pirie Val McDermid 9780802129123 Books
A rather convoluted story ending abruptly leaving several pieces missing. There is almost no suspense. The blueprint of one of the murder is delineated so clearly that one just has to wait for the "crucial" proof to clinch it. As to the other, there is no explanation for the perpetrator turning into a cold-blooded killer. What saves the book are the main protagonists and of course the feisty Karen - even if she is a little too feisty. So, three stars and hope that the next episode will be better.Tags : Broken Ground (Karen Pirie) [Val McDermid] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Broken Ground Karen Pirie Val McDermid 9780802129123 Books Reviews
Good plot with building detail. Several twists you wouldnt expect. Felt the ups and downs and self doubt a realistic portrayal of how you would feel. Gives it that believable feel. Thought Hamish could be rounded out a bit more. Why single, any interest apart from owning cafes?
Thought caravan compny keeping 25 year old records unlikely and unnecessary, just had to have details regarding selling diamonds.
Hence 4 stars
As always, I was enthralled. I love the ongoing character development, the intricacies of the developing relationships, and the pictures that form in my mind’s eye of life in this slice of Scotland. I couldn’t recommend it more highly!
This is the first book I have read in this series and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well written and did not give away the culprit too soon. The characters were well developed and I did not feel that I was missing something by not having read previous books in the series. I would really rate it a 4.5.
There are three stories running in parallel and it is slow going for quite some pages. Picks up speed at the end. Not her best, but not bad.
Broken Ground follows in McDermid's usual high quality mystery unravelling.
I did wonder if three cases intertwined here were too many - though they show the diversity of Cold Cases.
I questioned at the end, whether I had enough information to satisfy the importance of the buried motor bikes???
This is a very fast moving book and I liked it. The only thing that put me off a little was the way Alice was sort of just written out of the book. It's a great story. It's the first Karen Pirie detective book I've read. Have put the series on my reading list. Recommend this book to others.
Val McDermid continues to produce intelligent, challenging works of crime fiction. 'Broken Ground' keeps the bar very high.
Intriguingly she made two minor concessions to American buyers. I can't imagine anyone in Leith asking for a check or knowing what use Shinola may have. That said, our cousins would need to reach for their U.S. - Scottish dictionaries from time to time.
Equilibrium was satisfied.
