I am not a fan of espionage stories. I cannot remember how I first became aware of this author but after reading The Letter Promised in Jan. 2016, I immediately purchased all his other available books and read them one right after the other. Since then Mr. Wignall has been on my automatic buy list and I have never been disappointed. Go figure since I read no other espionage novels beside these. I will leave it to other far better reviewers than myself to share details of the plot. I will just add my 5 stars and encourage others to read this and all the other books by this author.Tags : Amazon.com: To Die in Vienna eBook: Kevin Wignall: Kindle Store, ebook,Kevin Wignall,To Die in Vienna,Thomas & Mercer
To Die in Vienna eBook Kevin Wignall Reviews
I give to "To die in Vienna only four stars because I feel it is not as good as previous works of this author. But I still loved it, it is a very pleasant read for all who like the genre. For me, K W is the John Le Care of the recent years.
Probably not full five stars but I really enjoy all Wgnall's books. I think story is real, developing nicely. Situations, conversations feel real. Main character is real, !likeable person even though with all good and bad we all have. Real treat, can't wait for the next book. I think With all is a true master of a new style spy novels. I am so grateful for this since this what I like to read for the last almost fifty years
This book started well and usually I like this kind of plot and premise. The action is few and far between. I just can't find anything to draw me to Freddie, the main character. He's morose, always going over his dismal failure in the past. He's Eoyre in human form. I wanted to care what happens to Him but just can't get there. Jason Bourne is not who he needed to be but honestly, Jason's wimpy sister would be more descriptive of Freddie. Love the story, but a little more action please. And Freddie had better step up his game because cardboard has more personality and life than this guy.
I was very impressed with this author. The only criticism is that there are almost no descriptions of cities or places or buildings or whatever that could give so much more depth and richness to the overall story. Otherwise, in my opinion, the writing and storyline are superb.
To Die in Vienna - This was very interesting, I have to admit, I liked A death in Sweden better, but this book had it's moments, and was very different. Someone is on the run, but he has no idea why, and you won't find out until the end. It's worth taking a look at.
This is simply a very well crafted story by a master story teller. I have read all of Wignall's titles to date and they are all superbly written tales. These stories are of the "cloak and dagger" variety with the usual deaths, gadgets and what not associated with this genre but that is where the comparison ends. You feel that these stories are what it is really like in this dark world with real people who are just people doing there job, as ugly as it is sometimes. Mr. Wignall's characters are compelling and real in a way that makes you care about them. I believe this book as well as others by this author would appeal to anyone that likes people with a past that are smart and resourceful, but are never the less very human that are put into difficult situations. Good stuff.
I can't remember how I found this book, but totally glad I did. This author is now one of my Favs mainly because he did not insult my intelligence with unnecessary, graphic language and sex scenes or stupid predictable characters ! Having been to Vienna more than once, my husband and I both loved this story and could see in our mind's eye so much of what transpired in this terrific espionage story. Loved this Book! Will be ordering all of his work soon and can't wait to read each. We are Daniel Silva fans and find his work also very intelligent and thought provoking - these author's works would make outstanding films -much better than the usual American film drivel out there these days
