I was really hoping that the author would lean harder into the dystopian part than the romance but that’s not what happens. The premise is interesting enough to catch your attention but unfortunately, it falls a bit shorter.
Everyone lives in a world where his or her entire future is planned as he or she reaches 18 and everyone has a perfect life, with the perfect partner. The story feels a bit unnatural and its narrative never really flows. It’s predictable and maybe even boring. Kama, our main character, is interesting but it’s not enough to make the story stand out. Part of the problem is the predictability of the plotline and the dialogues. It really needs a lot of work there.
If you’re looking for a sweet and romantic YA book maybe you won’t be disappointed. If you’re hoping for a dystopian YA novel it’s best to look for something else. Maybe I’m too old and I’m not the audience intended.

The premise of this book was interesting and original, but there seemed to be many grammatical and small plot errors (some may not mind, but these just make it difficult for me to appreciate the writer's craft). At one point Kama is sitting in the cafeteria talking with two old friends (Jocelyn and Matthew)about Jocelyn's sister, Melanie. In the next line, Kama "takes Melanie's hand" which is bizarre as Melanie is certainly not in the room. The relationship between Torrid and Kama seems a little too quick, and its a bit irritating the way that Kama (at age 18) jumps from imagining her life as the mother of Liam's children,then Torrid's. It's also a bit disappointing that when Torrid reveals the master plan that Kama is to follow, Kama doesn't really question the horrible thing she is supposed to do or ask to hear it from her father himself- she just accepts it.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I do like like the ideas set out in this book. I just wish that the author had found a better editor.
I read Desire based on all of the great reviews, and also, because I've been really into dystopian books lately. I've read the Hunger Games, Divergent, and Delirium all recently, and maybe that's why this one was such a disappointment for me. It just can't compare to those awesome books.

The premise of Desire caught my interest; it's pretty similar to the book Matched, but had a magical aspect that set it apart. My biggest complaint is the writing. The dialogue was contrived and unnatural, and so were the scenarios. It just didn't flow well at all. And it was very cliched. How many times do I have to read about a beautiful girl who has two gorgeous guys fight over her? It's so overdone and isn't interesting anymore.

My other problem with Desire was the big secret about Kama. I won't give anything away, but it was so ridicules, I couldn't help but laugh. It's like finding out that Edward from Twilight isn't a vampire but a leprechaun. I did finish Desire, so it wasn't completely terrible, but I wish I wouldn't have wasted my money.
The storyline is ok I guess. But the heroine’s reactions to everything are just too easy going. Some one says to her, “Oh by the way, your magic now,” and she doesn’t even question it. It’s sort of weird. The mom has seen some stuff in her life but she is like on Valium or something because nothing seems to phase her about her daughter’s plans. The governor is not evil enough to be the bad guy. The boyfriend is like a horny teenager and not good at math and that’s about it. There is nothing in his actions that shows why the heroine likes him so much except he buys her salad for lunch. I read the whole thing because I think the plot could have been cool but the characters are lacking.
We learn from the author’s biography that Kailin Gow has produced 400 books since she started in 2001; doing the arithmetic finds this means that on average she has produced a book every two weeks without fail. This means, of course, she is a truly prolific writer!

This may also explain why this book contains a lot of mistakes (spelling, grammar, repetitions, etc), so hopefully the book will be edited at some point, or at least proof-read, which would go a long way.

I always appreciate when an author has taken the time to do research and create a credible world—even, and sometimes especially, in sci-fi and fantasy, an author must of course make sure everything adds up in-world—and I didn’t get to enjoy that here.

While this book may be viewed in many ways as Gow’s take on The Hunger Games, for me it took the least interesting parts of those stories and ditched the parts that kept my attention. Evidently, I was not the right audience for this book; perhaps you will be.
