Nathan Hassall's second book, A Conscious Void, is a brand new journey for both the writer and reader alike. Leafing through the pages of prose, poetry, and occasional philosophy, we sail into work that has brought great challenges along the way; with heartfelt empathy and care, each piece has been tirelessly crafted to the smallest of details so that no meaning or message is ever lost. Godless space and time, the bitter-sweet Heaven of therapy, the undeniable hypocrisy of our most deeply held ideals; all is part of the extensive collage of questions and answers that appear in A Conscious Void. With surrealism, humour and cold cynicism, Nathan Hassall has created a very modern approach to poetry and prose, and perhaps most importantly - in an age when our greatest thinkers fear that Philosophy is dead - an accessible but daringly unique way to keep our minds from a dull, technology-induced slumber. Read between the lines, between the lines we draw in our minds and are too fearful to cross.

A Conscious Void Nathan Hassall 9781300108948 Books

An amazing walkabout through the subconscious. Hassall takes you to a place so deep and intimate, you feel like a perverted voyeur in his mind. After crossing through all of his fears, doubts, and wanderings, you are thrust into a death-like state, free falling into another existence. "Welcome to Genesis."

The collection is a reaffirmation that we are united by the uncertainties of our reality, and yet our destructive tendencies pull us apart.

My favorite quote from Torture:
"A beheading awaits in this beautiful stadium, as the doors open to a jubilant crowd - their hearts contract in distressing unity, as they get ever closer to tearing each others' open. Infectious adrenal glands pump chemicals around the sea of blood thirsty entities, their drug-induced states of ecstasy brings their hands together in rapturous applause."

A Conscious Void Nathan Hassall 9781300108948 Books Reviews

These short stories and poems are possibly the worst I have ever read. They read as if a three year old with disabilities has written them. I will not be wasting my hard earned cash on an author who is so self loathing and should be ashamed to call himself an author!
A fantastically written collection of short stories and poetry that is every bit as awesome as his first book 'Nascent Illusion'. Enticing the reader with his dark yet often quirky humour, Nathan shows great talent and provides a unique understanding of issues that are often hidden in society. Mr Hassall's affinity for writing is evident in his ability to create such wonderful pieces ranging from the serious and thought-provoking (Medicate the Masses, p31); awe-inspiring and beautiful (A Widow's Melody, p105) to the frankly bizarre (Fighting Fruit, p49) and simply shocking (Bounce, p137). Both 'Nascent Illusion' and 'A Conscious Void' are superb examples of Nathan's sheer talent and devotion to writing and I can promise that you, as a reader, won't be disappointed. I therefore implore new customers to purchase both books and to open your mind to the weird yet wonderful; to get lost in the dark depths of this writers imagination and to come out the other side with a fresh perspective on life.
This collection of poems covers a wide range of deep; meaningful; and, often sarcastic topics, expressed through poetic and philosophical literature. Hassall shows good intuition to touch upon sensitive subjects such as death and the darker areas of the human mind; which he reflects through honest sentiment and personal belief. Despite the heavy topics, most of the poems are easy to read and do not fail to pull the reader into Hassall's world of shattered minds and ambivalent thoughts. He seems to pick every word with care and puts the reader in a position where they often find themselves surprised by unforeseen twist at the end of each piece.
For me, the poems in "A Conscious Void" were a great joy to read and think about afterwards. It contains dark and abstract views on life which resurfaced some thoughts I had previously buried the back of my head which travelled way further than the 140-ish pages it is written on. Great work!
A Conscious Void begins with a Pangea of Nothingness and then takes the reader on a course through a downward spiral of insanity, humor, time and space that fragments consciousness to the inevitable solitariness of the nothingness of death.

Enter a world of inescapable madness; where beauty and sadness are two faces of the same coin; where the labyrinths have doors, but no escape. Regret is a luxury and there is logic, but no sense.

Mr. Hassall's poetry and short stories are metaphors that explore numerous themes. In them, Mr. Hassall recites a narrative of searching for identity in an increasingly unperceived world; with the full knowledge that identity is illusory (Fishing For Happiness). He also presents a seeming desire to inject a different dynamic into the static (Pantheistic Science), whilst observing the meaninglessness of doing so. Mr. Hassall is at his most lucid when exploring the depths of madness (Sanity, Asylums); the despair of insanity (Bitter Reflection, Painful Art of a Schizophrenics Dream) and praying to the Gods of psychiatric medicine (Medicate the Masses). Mr. Hassall's critiques of political paradigms and pop culture (The Bigger Picture, Club Face) seem somehow at odds with the overall feel of the work and, quite frankly, lack a fresh perspective; perhaps he needs to let these themes marinate for a bit longer and hone them slightly more. But the Author more than compensates for this by exploring the loss of innocence (The Ambient Chronicles), which cries out from the beginning of the book and echoes through the pages.

Put simply, the book is a dark journey that is illuminated by the exploration of fear. But in so doing, it is the gift of liberation.

"Your final destination is the ground, where your

soul shall eternally drift, through the merciless

water of your own trepidation.

Good morning, beautiful human. Welcome to

Genesis."
