The good news is that this novel is extremely well written; the author’s voice is engaging and fresh, and she uses humor to great effect. The bad news is that, for me at least, the characters never felt fully developed or social issues fully engaged with, so the whole novel wound up being very bland and not very interesting. In part, that may be because so many characters were given what felt like relatively long backstories for no reason I could discern (assuming that the blurbs are correct and that this is, at its heart, Greer’s story). Greer’s relationship with Faith felt underdeveloped and far less well explored than it could have been, and even Greer’s own “growth” from young, budding feminist to major player seemed nonexistent. A pity, because the interesting premise and really great writing should have resulted in a much better product.

The Female Persuasion A Novel Meg Wolitzer 9781594488405 Books Reviews

Meg Wolitzer takes charge in her newest novel with such nuance in the writing, ambitious yet reserved characters, and stories so imaginative while remaining grounded, this is THE FEMALE PERSUASION. Most definitely a story for today. Hot topics abound such as who is the modern feminist, how do we define consent, and the importance of the female activism.

College-bound Greer is desperately trying to find her way all on her own. Her parents don’t seem to be able to offer her any guidance, in fact, they could use a little themselves. Her next-door neighbor, who becomes her boyfriend of consequence, is smothered in attention from his immigrant family. The teens stick together, and plan to through college and beyond.

College is going to be the setting for Greer’s caterpillar-to-butterfly explosion and it’s fascinating to watch how she attempts to follow her developing lifelong dreams.

Enter female mentorship. Is everything what it seems? Can women find what they are looking for even in our modern time? Are women able to give as graciously to each other? What happens when you watch your hero partake in the mundane?

While so many serious issues are confronted, there is abundantly good humor in the book.

A jumble of emotions. That is what I was left with after finishing the book. I fell deeply for some of the characters. Sometimes seething at the parents. Well, most of the time. Not understanding choices that were made by the younger set. But realizing that they were young. Been there. Pained watching the older set as they tried to redeem themselves or make sacrifices. Because. Overall, I was just enamored with the volume of what this book held. How much ground it covered. So much relevance. Everlasting.
Oh My Goodness! Thank you for writing this!
There is much great fiction written by women but for me, some stand as landmarks.....Small Changes, The Women’s Room, Meridian, the poetry of Nikki Giovanni and Gwendolyn Brooks...Meg Wurlitzer just hit that mark. What an incredible writer. My patchouli soaked sensibilities are sated.
Not a literary masterpiece, but a darn good read. This novel is a well-plotted intergenerational story of women that integrates two waves of feminism--the 60s and 70s wave and the contemporary wave. Although the language never soars and the ideas are rarely illuminated in fresh ways, I couldn't put the book down. THE FEMALE PERSUASION touches on many timely issues--sexual identity and feminism, color and economics in feminism, workplace harassment, ambition versus values, the hollowness of some philanthropic organizations--and concludes with a chapter about the Women's March of 2017 and the horrors of Trump without ever mentioning by name the monster in the White House. Ironically, the biggest and most admirable feminist in the novel is a man--Cory--who does what needs to be done for his mother with love and respect and doesn't foist responsibility for her on female relatives. This is a fast, reasonably satisfying read to be shared by women in their 60s and 70s and their adult daughters.
Wow. I so looked forward to this book and was SO disappointed! Wolitzer desperately needed an editor to cut through the strangling, exhausting exposition and give this narrative some pace! She has four stories spinning out at once that do, obviously, intersect, but each one feels, oddly, both truncated and excessive. The same stories are told again and again, but not in some intriguing Rashomonesque way -- simply repeated by other characters.
The strangest lacuna in the book is the fact that there is no real relationship between Greer and her "mentor" Faith Frank; I can count on one hand the times they are actually in the same room! This is a novel more about anxiety of influence than female mentorship, and is curiously dated for a novel touted to be relevant in the current climate.
I am a huge fan of this author's many wonderful novels, and exquisite writing because of the universality of her themes, her characters' authenticity, many who jump from the page and into our hearts, including the flawed because, in reality we are all flawed. In this, her latest, and I say, greatest...heart, humor, and her signature brilliance blend seamlessly as her characters explore the setbacks and heartache associated with the challenges women must take to become relevant, and even harder to stay relevant, while seeking the wisdom and support from those who dared before them. A truly great read.
The good news is that this novel is extremely well written; the author’s voice is engaging and fresh, and she uses humor to great effect. The bad news is that, for me at least, the characters never felt fully developed or social issues fully engaged with, so the whole novel wound up being very bland and not very interesting.
